Miss W is a Drama Queen!

Pretty clever title for the blog huh? It totally describes me...Well, not really. But at the same time... yes. I don't know. I am really confusing when it comes to drama and dance and putting myself out there.

I am probably one of the most reserved people you will meet. I am so quiet, I hardly ever talk. That is until you get to know me. Then I am a total chatterbox with absolutely no shame. While I remain in my shell around those who don't know me, if you were to put me on a stage, I am more than happy to put a show on for everyone. If I am performing, it's like I am a different person. While most of my performing has been done in music, I do have a secret love for drama and dance. Sometimes I wonder why I never pursued my dreams of being on broadway. But then I remember I have bills to pay. Teaching is pretty great though. It's like being the centre of attention in a very low key way.

Anyway... While I love the arts, and think that they are important in education, I have been very hesitant when it comes to actually teaching the arts. Especially dance. Visual arts is more my worry, but that is not what this blog is about. This blog is about drama and dance. Dance is something that I never did as a kid. My parents could never really afford to put me into extra curricular activities, so I got soccer for one summer and piano lessons for about a year. I always wanted to dance, and I felt that I could potentially be good at it. I just never got the opportunity.

The only dance I remember in school was in grade 8 when we did a line dance routine in our gym class. If you think I am kidding, stop that right now. Because I am not. That is the only thing I remember. I may have done more, but I really don't think I did.

I am not in anyway a choreographer. This made me immediately believe that I am not qualified to teach a dance class. However, this class that I am taking has really helped me to see that I do not need to be a professional. I can teach a dance class, or at least incorporate dance and movement into core subjects.

I am a little more comfortable with drama, but not a whole lot. I don't remember doing much drama. I was in a play in grade 1 in which I played a father who got crushed by a falling evergreen. I got to wear a moustache drawn on my face with eyeliner. That was fun. But now, I am starting to understand that drama should be incorporated into core subjects. it should not be solely reserved for winter plays and other special events.

Incorporating the arts into other subjects really does allow for more engagement and can provide useful tools for assessment.

With this understanding of integrating the arts into other subjects makes me so excited. It gives me more of an excuse to be more dramatic than I already can be!
